There’s a moment that arrives in the second year.
Not the first, deep sharp edge of change.
Not the initial quiet that settles after the bags have been packed, the busy airport travels have been made and later, the car that pulls away from campus.
This one is softer.
More familiar.
And somehow, more tender.
They are heading back.
Second year.
Already walking further into lives that are becoming their own.
I watch them with a pride that feels deep and steady.
The kind that doesn’t need to announce itself.
They are growing, in confidence and in independence and, in the quiet certainty of finding their way.
And still, my heart remains tender.
Not broken.
Not empty.
Simply open, in a new way.
This chapter in life, this journey, is not about absence.
It is about expansion, the same ‘Quiet Expansion’ I have been learning to notice and name.
Their world continues to widen.
New friendships. New questions. New strength forming in places I can no longer see every day.
And here, in the space that once held constant movement, something else is unfolding too.
Room.
Room to reflect.
Room to learn, study and develop.
Room to grow alongside them, rather than in the same direction.
Room to become more fully myself in this season.
I remember writing about the first leaving – about the quiet pride that comes from knowing they are exactly where they need to be. About the connection that remains, even when the physical closeness softens. About the way we grow in different directions, yet stay aligned in love.
That truth has only deepened.
The second year does not erase the tenderness.
It simply teaches a different kind of strength. The strength of allowing, the strength of trusting, the strength of holding space without needing to hold on.
Home is still home.
Love is still the constant.
Support still travels the distance.
And in the quiet moments – the ones that arrive after the goodbyes and after the house settles – I notice something beautiful.
This is not an ending.
This is a widening.
Their growth does not diminish what we have built.
It builds upon it.
I am proud.
Deeply, quietly proud.
And my heart, still tender, is learning that tenderness and strength can live side by side.
This is the next chapter.
Not quieter because something is missing,
but rather quieter, because something is expanding.

As this second year begins, it continues to teach me that expansion and tenderness can live side by side.

Their world, widens. My world, softens and deepens.
In the quieter days that follow each goodbye, I find myself reaching for small, intentional things that support both their growth and my own grounding. I find objects that feel like gentle extensions of care, across the distance.

They are quiet companions for a season of becoming – for them, and for me.
